Uganda Confirms Cases of Monkeypox Outbreak

The Ugandan Health Ministry has announced the country's first two confirmed cases of monkeypox (mpox), a viral disease that has been spreading globally. The cases were identified in the western border district of Kasese, specifically in the towns of Mpondwe and nearby Bwera.

The confirmation of the cases comes after the Africa Union allocated $10.4 million in funding to help combat the outbreak across the continent. The funding is aimed at supporting member states in their response to the outbreak, including surveillance, contact tracing, and vaccination efforts.

According to the Health Ministry, nine people are currently under medical surveillance due to their contact with the two confirmed cases. The ministry has assured the public that measures are being taken to prevent further spread of the disease.

The cases in Uganda follow reports of monkeypox cases in neighboring countries, including Kenya and Burundi. Last month, Kenya reported one case of monkeypox, while Burundi reported three cases.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the outbreak of monkeypox in Africa is a concerning trend, and has called for increased vigilance and coordination among member states to combat the spread of the disease.

As the situation continues to unfold, the public is advised to remain calm but vigilant, and to take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the disease.
