Onyeka Onwenu, the legendary singer, performer, and actress, left an indelible mark on the Nigerian entertainment industry. Her passing on Tuesday, July 30th, 2024, at the age of 72, has sent shockwaves through the nation. With a career spanning over four decades, Onwenu's impact on music, film, and politics is immeasurable.

Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, Onwenu began her music career in the 1980s, releasing her debut album, "For the Love of You," in 1981. Her hit song "One Love" remains an anthem for generations. Her acting career was equally impressive, with numerous Nollywood films under her belt and several awards to her name. Onwenu's contributions to the arts earned her recognition as one of the pioneers of Nigerian music.


Beyond her artistic achievements, Onwenu was a dedicated public servant. She served as the Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and as the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development. Her commitment to empowering women and promoting Nigerian culture was unwavering. In 2011, she was honored with the National Order of the Federal Republic (MFR), a testament to her tireless efforts.
