South Sudan has enforced a nationwide nighttime curfew after violent riots in the capital, Juba, left three people dead and seven others wounded. The unrest erupted following reports of the alleged killings of 29 South Sudanese citizens in neighboring Sudan, reportedly by the Sudanese army and allied groups.

The violence highlights the fragile relations between the two nations, which have been marred by decades of conflict and unresolved border disputes since South Sudan's independence in 2011. The deaths of South Sudanese citizens in Sudan sparked outrage, leading to retaliatory riots in Juba. In response, South Sudanese security forces have begun relocating Sudanese nationals to safer areas, aiming to protect them from potential attacks by angry mobs.

This crisis underscores the urgent need for both countries to adopt diplomatic measures to de-escalate tensions. South Sudan must work to restore public order and foster unity among its citizens while ensuring the safety of Sudanese nationals within its borders. Meanwhile, Sudan must conduct an impartial investigation into the alleged killings and hold those responsible accountable. Transparent communication from both governments is critical to preventing the spread of misinformation, which can fuel further violence.

Beyond immediate actions, the two nations should establish a bilateral crisis management framework to address such incidents collaboratively in the future. This framework should focus on open dialogue, cross-border monitoring, and mechanisms to protect the rights of citizens living in each other’s territories. In addition, regional bodies such as the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) should mediate talks to ensure peaceful resolutions and long-term stability.

The Juba riots reflect the deep scars of division and mistrust in the region. However, this crisis presents an opportunity for South Sudan and Sudan to strengthen diplomatic ties, prioritize human rights, and work towards a more peaceful coexistence. Only through cooperation can they prevent future tragedies and build a more stable future for their citizens.
