Senegal's Electric Bus Revolution- A Transformative Step Towards Sustainable Mobility

Senegal is leading the way in Africa's transition to sustainable urban transportation with the launch of its fully electric Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in the capital city of Dakar. This groundbreaking project is a significant step forward for the region.

The Dakar BRT system spans 18.3 kilometers and is expected to carry up to 300,000 passengers per day, significantly reducing travel times from 95 minutes to just 45 minutes.

The system operates a fleet of 144 state-of-the-art electric articulated buses, powered by robust 560 kWh batteries that can be fully charged in just 6 hours using 120 kW charging stations.

What makes this project truly remarkable is its comprehensive approach to sustainable mobility. The BRT system incorporates inclusive design features such as level boarding platforms, pedestrian crossings, walkways, and cycle tracks to ensure accessibility for all users, including women, children, and persons with disabilities.

Additionally, the system is integrated with the city's regional Train Express Regional (TER) system, enabling seamless multimodal connectivity.

The Dakar BRT project is a collaborative effort between the government, the private sector, and international development institutions.

The World Bank provided financing for the construction, while the private sector partner, Dakar Mobilité, is responsible for the procurement, operation, and maintenance of the bus fleet under a 15-year concession agreement.

This public-private partnership model helps to mitigate risks and ensure the long-term sustainability of the system.

The project has also created 1,000 jobs, with 35% of these positions allocated to women, a significant achievement in the region.

To further promote inclusivity, the BRT system offers a reduced fare for lower-income and marginalized groups, with the government providing a subsidy to the concessionaire to offset the revenue loss.

Dakar's electric BRT system is a shining example of how African cities can lead the way in sustainable urban transportation. By prioritizing clean, efficient, and inclusive mobility solutions, Senegal is paving the way for a more sustainable and equitable future for its citizens.

This project serves as an inspiration for other African cities to follow suit and embrace the transformative power of electric buses and integrated public transport systems.
