Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are gearing up for a critical summit aimed at addressing the escalating conflict in eastern Congo. Organized by Kenyan President William Ruto, the meeting comes as the M23 rebel group, allegedly supported by Rwanda, advances into the city of Goma, raising alarm both regionally and internationally.

The unrest has already resulted in casualties, with Rwanda reporting five civilian deaths and 25 injuries near Gisenyi, a border town adjacent to Goma. In response, the border between Rwanda and Congo was closed, fueling fears of further violence and economic disruption. President Ruto underscored the importance of a peaceful resolution, stating that a military solution was unlikely to succeed. Instead, he advocated direct engagement with the M23 and other stakeholders.

Despite previous mediation efforts, including Angola-led negotiations, progress has been elusive. Rwanda has insisted on direct peace talks between Kinshasa and the M23, a rebel group accusing Congo of violating past agreements. As both nations prepare for the summit, the international community remains watchful, urging de-escalation and a focus on civilian safety. The stakes are high, and the outcome of the summit could either stabilize the region or deepen the crisis.

In another development, protests erupt in Kinshasa over M23 Rebels’ Advance into Goma

Meanwhile, the M23’s advance into Goma has sparked widespread protests in Kinshasa, the DRC’s capital. Demonstrators, angered by what they perceive as Rwanda’s involvement and international complacency, targeted embassies with violent actions. Police used tear gas to disperse crowds, but not before the French embassy briefly caught fire. Other diplomatic missions, including those of Rwanda, the United States, Uganda, and Kenya, were also attacked.

Protesters accused France and the United States of failing to hold Rwanda accountable, reflecting a growing frustration among Congolese citizens. The demonstrations highlight the deepening divide between the DRC and its neighbors, as well as a perceived indifference from Western nations.

With both a military crisis in Goma and unrest in the capital, Congo faces immense pressure to restore stability. Whether through diplomatic breakthroughs or decisive government action, the path forward remains uncertain as tensions continue to mount.
