Puseletso Seema: The Enduring Queen of Famo Music
Puseletso Seema, born in 1949 in Johannesburg, South Africa, has etched her name in the annals of Lesotho's musical history as the unparalleled "Queen of Famo." Her journey from a young girl tending cattle to a celebrated musician is a testament to her resilience and passion for her craft.
Raised by her aunt, Seema began composing songs at the tender age of 16 while looking after livestock. Despite societal norms that frowned upon female singers, she nurtured her talent, laying the foundation for a remarkable career.
Her personal life was fraught with challenges. After enduring a forced marriage following an assault, she relocated to Mahobong in Lesotho. The subsequent death of her husband in 1970 led to further hardships, including being ostracized by her in-laws. Undeterred, Seema returned to Johannesburg, where she worked as a food and drinks vendor in local mines. It was during this period that she immersed herself in the Famo musical tradition, performing with the troupe Tau ea Linare.
Famo, characterized by its accordion-driven melodies and poignant lyrics, became Seema's medium of expression. Her debut album in 1980, featuring a heartfelt tribute to her late brother, catapulted her into the limelight, breaking barriers in a male-dominated genre. Over the years, she has released over 32 albums, with notable tracks like "Mme Mamohato," "Basali ba ntlhoile keng," and "Kea ikokobetsa."
Beyond music, Seema introduced "Pitiki," an event aimed at empowering newly married women through traditional Basotho songs and dances. This initiative provided a platform for women to seek counsel and celebrate their cultural heritage.
Despite her contributions, Seema has faced challenges in recent years. By July 2024, she lamented the lack of invitations to perform at major events, expressing feelings of isolation and neglect. She appealed to authorities and event organizers to recognize her enduring legacy and involve her in national celebrations.
