Patrick Kilonzo Mwalua - Celebrating the Life of an inspiring conservation activist

Updated: Jul 23

Patrick Kilonzo Mwalua is a Kenyan man from the Tsavo region who has become known for his tireless efforts to ensure wild animals in the area have access to clean drinking water, especially during Kenya's frequent droughts.

Since the early 2010s, Mwalua has been driving a truck filled with thousands of gallons of water to remote waterholes and watering holes throughout Tsavo National Park and the surrounding areas.

He makes these arduous trips multiple times per week, often driving long distances over rough terrain, to provide a vital lifeline for thirsty elephants, buffalo, antelope, and other wildlife.

Mwalua's dedication and passion for wildlife conservation have made him a local hero.

The local Kenyan and international conservation communities have praised his selfless work to support the Tsavo ecosystem during times of scarcity. His story has inspired people around the world to support his initiatives and get involved in similar grassroots conservation efforts.

Besides providing water to wild animals, Kilonzo also engages local communities in wildlife education and anti-poaching efforts. He has worked to cultivate a sense of pride and ownership over Tsavo's natural resources among the people who live closest to the park,

During his lifetime he spearheaded efforts to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts by encouraging farming practices that reduce such conflicts, including planting sunflowers, and plants that repel elephants.

In many ways, Mwalua can be seen as a modern-day embodiment of the original Waterman of Tsavo's legacy. His dedication to protecting the land and its wildlife through sustainable practices is a testament to the enduring importance of that pioneering figure's work.

Mwalua's story shows how one person can make a profound difference in conservation, even against challenging odds.

The father of two girls and the 2019 recipient of the Head of State Commendation, will be buried in Kajire, Taita Taveta, on Friday next week.
