Kenyan athletes Sharon Lokedi and John Korir delivered outstanding performances at the 129th Boston Marathon on April 21, 2025, securing victories in the women’s and men’s races, respectively.

Sharon Lokedi clinched the women’s title with a record-breaking time of 2:17:22, surpassing the previous course record set in 2014 by over two minutes. She outpaced two-time defending champion Hellen Obiri, who finished 19 seconds behind, and Ethiopia’s Yalemzerf Yehualaw, who took third place. Lokedi, a University of Kansas alumna and 2022 New York Marathon winner, celebrated her victory by embracing her mother at the finish line.

In the men’s race, John Korir emerged victorious with a time of 2:04:45, the second-fastest in the event’s history. Despite an early stumble near the starting line, Korir surged ahead at mile 20 to secure the win. His triumph follows in the footsteps of his older brother, Wesley Korir, the 2012 Boston Marathon champion, making them the first siblings to both win the prestigious race. Korir dedicated his $150,000 prize to the Transcend Talent Academy, supporting young athletes in Kenya.

These victories continue Kenya’s dominance in long-distance running, with Kenyan women winning the Boston Marathon every year since 2021. The 2025 event also commemorated the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution’s first shots, featuring colonial-themed tributes, including a reenactment of Paul Revere’s ride.

Approximately 30,000 runners participated in this iconic marathon, which blended athletic excellence with historical remembrance.
