Juneteenth

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The date marks the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce the end of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln.



The Juneteenth celebration has had a significant impact on the Black community in America. It represents a symbolic and cultural milestone, acknowledging the long struggle for freedom and equality endured by enslaved African Americans,

Preserve and celebrate Black history and heritage:

Juneteenth provides an opportunity for the Black community to honor its ancestors, reflect on the past, and educate younger generations about the realities of slavery and the ongoing fight for civil rights.

Promote racial justice and equity: The commemoration of Juneteenth has encouraged ongoing efforts to address systemic racism, advocate for policy changes, and work towards true equality and inclusion for Black Americans.

The recognition of Juneteenth as a national holiday in 2021 was a significant step forward, but the work of dismantling racism and achieving racial justice remains ongoing. Juneteenth serves as a reminder of the progress made and the progress still to be achieved.
