South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has paid tribute to the 14 soldiers who lost their lives during a peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) two weeks ago. Describing them as “brave heroes,” he emphasized their sacrifice in the pursuit of peace, not just for the DRC but for the entire African continent.

The soldiers, who were part of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), died while working to restore stability in one of Africa’s most conflict-ridden regions. Their mission was to protect civilians and support the Congolese government in addressing armed insurgencies that have plagued the country for decades.

A solemn ceremony was held at Swartkop Airforce Base in Centurion, where the soldiers were honored before their bodies were handed over to their families. The event was attended by military officials, government representatives, and grieving relatives, all of whom paid their last respects.

President Ramaphosa acknowledged the immense sacrifice of these soldiers, stating that their courage and commitment to Africa’s peace will never be forgotten. He also reaffirmed South Africa’s dedication to regional stability, noting that the fallen troops’ mission was a reflection of the country’s commitment to Pan-African solidarity.

The tragedy has once again highlighted the dangers of peacekeeping missions in volatile regions. As South Africa mourns, there is also a renewed call for stronger international efforts to bring lasting peace to the DRC and other conflict zones in Africa.
