Guinea's Ex-Dictator Moussa Dadis Camara Convicted of Crimes Against Humanity

A Guinean court has found former junta leader Moussa Dadis Camara guilty of crimes against humanity for his role in the 2009 stadium massacre, sentencing him to 20 years in prison. The massacre occurred during a pro-democracy rally where over 150 people were killed, and numerous others were raped, tortured, and kidnapped.

Camara and several other former military leaders were charged with murder, rape, torture, and kidnapping. The court's president, Ibrahima Sory II Tounkara, stated that Camara's guilt was based on his responsibility as the upper hierarchy. Several other former military commanders received life sentences, while four defendants were found not guilty.

Human Rights Watch's international justice counsel, Tamara Aburamadan, described the hearing as a "long-awaited moment of truth for the victims and their families." Camara had denied the charges, blaming his subordinates for the massacre.
