Extremists in Northern Part of Mozambique have Weaponized Rape

Wisdom C. Nwoga

In the troubled province of Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique, a devastating trend has emerged. Extremist groups are using rape as a weapon, forcing young girls into marriages with their fighters. This heinous practice is not only a violation of human rights but also a tactic to spread fear and control among the local population.

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have reported a surge in the abduction of minors, who are then systematically forced to marry members of these extremist groups. The victims, some as young as 12 years old, are subjected to physical and emotional abuse, and their families are left helpless.

The use of rape as a weapon is a stark reminder of the brutality of these extremist groups. The trauma inflicted on these young girls will have long-lasting effects on their lives and their communities. The international community must take immediate action to support the Mozambican government in addressing this crisis and ensuring the safety and well-being of these vulnerable children.

The world cannot afford to turn a blind eye to this horror. We must come together to condemn this practice and support efforts to rescue and rehabilitate these young victims. Only through collective action can we hope to end this nightmare and restore peace to the people of Cabo Delgado.

What do see as a possible solution to this?
