With over 100 inner courts, museums, markets, and numerous other structures, this majestic palace is widely regarded as the largest in Africa, attracting visitors from around the world who seek to experience the rich heritage of the continent.

Built almost 1,000 years ago, in 1340, during the reign of Olowo Irengenje, the palace has been a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the Owo people. Its 1,000 rooms and courtyards, known as Ugha, are a labyrinth of ancient facilities, artifacts, and monuments, many of which are now preserved in the National Museum Centre situated within the palace.

According to historian Olusola Olutayo, "Each courtyard has a specific function and was dedicated to a particular deity. The largest courtyard, which was twice the size of an American football field, was used for public assemblies and festivals." This highlights the significance of the palace as a center of cultural and spiritual life in the Owo Kingdom.

In 2000, the Federal Government declared the palace a national monument, recognizing its importance as a cultural and historical treasure. Today, the Olowo Palace stands as a proud symbol of Nigeria's rich cultural heritage, inviting visitors to explore its ancient splendor and experience the traditions of the Owo people
