Did you know? Two African Countries are Considered not to have be Colonized

Broots Magazine family! Today, we are embarking on a journey to explore a fascinating aspect of African history – the stories of two nations that defied the scourge of colonialism. Meet Ethiopia and Liberia, the only two African countries that were never formally colonized by European powers.

Ethiopia's story is one of bravery, strategic diplomacy, and a fierce determination to preserve its independence. In 1895, Italian forces invaded Ethiopia, but the Ethiopians, led by Emperor Menelik II, resisted fiercely. The Battle of Adwa in 1896 was a decisive victory for Ethiopia, and Italy was forced to recognize its independence. This triumph made Ethiopia a symbol of African pride and resistance.

On the other hand, Liberia's story is equally captivating. Founded in 1847 by the American Colonization Society, Liberia was intended as a haven for freed slaves from the United States. While some argue that Liberia's connection to the American Colonization Society makes its independence questionable, its history is undeniably unique. Liberia's founders sought to create a nation where African Americans could govern themselves and maintain their cultural identity.

So, the question here is: what secrets lie behind Ethiopia and Liberia's ability to resist colonialism?

For Ethiopia, its strategic location, mountainous terrain, and strong leadership played a significant role. Emperor Menelik II's diplomatic prowess and military strategy kept European powers at bay. Liberia, on the other hand, leveraged its connection to the United States and the American Colonization Society to maintain its independence.

What lessons can we learn from the Unconquered?

The stories of Ethiopia and Liberia offer valuable lessons for Africa and the world. Their resistance to colonialism testifies of the power of determination, strategic thinking, and cultural pride. As we reflect on their histories, we are reminded that independence is not just a political state but also a mindset.
