Africa Rallies for Climate Action: Building Momentum and Financial Support for a Sustainable Future

At the Africa Climate Summit this year, panelists urged leaders and stakeholders to sustain and amplify the progress achieved at last year’s summit. In the Nairobi Declaration, leaders set ambitious goals for advancing green development across Africa. Now, the focus has shifted toward strengthening multilateral cooperation, prioritizing climate adaptation, and pressing for essential reforms in global financial structures to support these goals.

Musalia Mudavadi, Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, acknowledged the challenge as “daunting but surmountable.” He highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to prevent African nations from facing increasing debt burdens while striving for climate adaptation.

Africa, home to nearly 17% of the global population, contributes only about 7% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Yet, the continent is exceptionally vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, due to limited resources for adaptation and resilience.

In light of this, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called on wealthy nations to double their contributions for climate adaptation, proposing an increase to $40 billion annually by 2025. These funds could empower African nations to bolster resilience against extreme weather events such as droughts and floods, enhance forest cover, protect biodiversity, and accelerate renewable energy development.
