The Lake Chad Basin, covering nearly 8% of Africa and spanning seven countries, holds immense potential. However, persistent challenges such as insecurity, climate change, food shortages, and economic instability continue to hinder development in the region. Efforts to curb illicit drug trafficking and prevent violent extremism have been critical, with Nigeria recently hosting the 5th Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum in Maiduguri to strengthen regional cooperation. But what is truly needed for meaningful progress?

First, enhanced regional security collaboration is vital. The Boko Haram insurgency and other armed groups have destabilized the region, making coordinated military and intelligence-sharing efforts between affected countries crucial. Strengthening the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) and investing in community-led security initiatives can help restore peace.

Second, addressing climate change and water management is essential. Lake Chad has significantly shrunk due to climate change and unsustainable water use, impacting livelihoods. Countries must prioritize sustainable water management, reforestation, and climate-resilient agricultural practices to support local economies and reduce environmental stress.
Third, boosting economic and social investments is key. Governments and international partners should promote small-scale agriculture, fisheries, and trade while improving infrastructure like roads, electricity, and market access. Expanding education and vocational training programs, especially for youth, can help curb unemployment and prevent them from joining extremist groups.
Fourth, combating drug trafficking and organized crime is necessary. Strengthening border controls, intelligence-sharing, and community-based interventions can help disrupt illicit trade networks that fund violence in the region.
Finally, inclusive governance and local participation must be prioritized. Involving local leaders, civil society, and marginalized communities in decision-making will ensure that policies reflect the region’s realities and needs.
The outcomes of the 5th Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum should translate into concrete, sustained actions rather than just policy discussions. Long-term commitment from governments, donors, and local communities will determine whether the basin sees lasting peace and development.
